The Okavango Delta, in Botswana, is the world's largest inland delta. The area was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that dried up some 10,000 years ago. Today, the Okavango River has no outlet to the sea. Instead, it empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert.
The waters of the Okavango Delta are subject to seasonal flooding. Islands can disappear completely during the peak flood, then reappear at the end of the season.
The Okavango Delta is home to an excellent diversity of birdlife (including Pel's Fishing Owl), frogs and a myriad of game species, some specially adapted to water, such as the rate sitatunga and the familiar red lechwe. Lion, leopard, elephant, zebra, hippo and crocodile are all found in the Okavango.
Activities you experience in the Okavango include mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris, island bush walks, motorboat cruises, day and night game drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers to track the animals, viewing animals from "hides" near water holes, and birding.
