Damaraland — Namibia

Vehicle and elephantDamaraland is a land of stark desert beauty, with early morning mists drifting along the canyons, inhabited by Herero-speaking people, who in the 19th century were often referred to by outsiders as "Damaras." The Namib Desert is on its western boundary and the Kalahari Desert is on its eastern boundary.

Damaraland consists of desert areas stripped of all vegetation and covered with gigantic sand-dunes as well as mountain ranges and solitary peaks coming out of valleys, deep ravines and high plateaus. This mountainous area flows into the Omaheke plain and the Kalahari Desert, which is crossed by dry river-beds and is sparsely inhabited.

dora Nawas desert areaThis area has a number of freshwater springs that support healthy populations of animals, including desert-adapted black rhino and elephants as well as populations of Hartmann's mountain zebra, giraffe, gemsbok, springbok and kudu. The predator population of lion, cheetah, leopard and brown and spotted hyena is the largest outside of the Etosha National Park. Bird life is prolific and diverse.

Activities include game drives, nature walks, rhino tracking and, for the more hardy, mountain biking.
