Tanzania can truly
claim to be the home of the "safari" since
the origin of the word is Kiswahili for journey.
Tanzania has always been acknowledged as
the home of some of the most highly populated
wildlife areas in Africa. It's the place
to see seemingly endless herds of wildebeest
and zebra trekking across the plains on their
annual migrations followed by predators,
lion, cheetah and hyena.
Safaris in Tanzania can feature visits to:

The main area for exploring the game is the
Northern Circuit, which includes many
of the country's most famous National Parks.
Serengeti National
Park
The Serengeti National Park is the
best-known wildlife sanctuary and within
its boundaries are more than three million
large mammals. About 35 species of plains
animals can be seen here including the "big
5" elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard.
It is also the setting for one of nature's
miracles - the annual wildebeest migration
of over a million animals heading north into
the Masai Mara and then back to the Serengeti.
Balloon safaris are run daily (weather permitting),
offering a completely different perspective
to game viewing.
Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest
unbroken calderas in the world, surrounded
by steep walls rising 610 meters from the
crater floor. This natural amphitheater covers
an area of about 100 square miles, and is
home to an abundance of wild animals including
gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest, wildebeest,
zebra and warthog, which attract plenty of
predators. More than 100 species of birds
not found in the Serengeti have been spotted
here. One of the most spectacular sights
to see is the countless flamingo forming
a pink blanket over the soda lakes. The crater
has been declared a World Heritage Site.
Arusha National
Park
Arusha National Park consists of 3
outstanding features, the Memela Lakes, Meru
Crater and Ngurdoto Crater. The vegetation
and wildlife varies with the topography,
which ranges from forest to swamp. On clear
days magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount
Meru can be seen from almost anywhere
in the Park.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest freestanding
mountain in the world, so can be truly regarded
as the roof of Africa. It is a major draw
for mountain climbers and for people with
little or no specialized climbing experience.
The peaks of Mawenzi are for experienced
mountaineers only. There are several routes
and the total climb takes about 5 to 6 days.
Lake Manyara National
Park
Lake Manyara National Park is nestled
at the base of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment and
noted for its incredible beauty. It is also
famous for its tree-climbing lions, which
spend most of their day spread out along
the branches of Acacia Trees, 6 to 7 meters
above the ground.
Tarangire National
Park
Close to Arusha, this park gets its name
from the river that threads its way through
the length of the reserve. Between June and
October, the dry period, the wildlife is
most spectacular when thousands of animals
migrate from the dry Masai steppe to the
Tarangire River looking for water.
Zanzibar
For
a completely different experience, visit
the exotic island of Zanzibar, which
offers dazzling white palm-fringed beaches
and plenty of water activities. Zanzibar,
also known as the "spice island" because
of the many different spices grown there,
has a rich heritage reflected in the architecture
and culture of the people.
